Estimates of risks from data on the first-degree relatives of 6600 diabetics will be useful for genetic counselling and a more detailed account of the data and its genetic inter¬ pretation will be published elsewhere.

Abstract

RIMOIN1 has critically reviewed the various concepts that have been proposed to explain the inheritance of diabetes and has indi¬ cated that no one genetic hypothesis is universally accepted. It is clear, however, that the risk of becoming diabetic is greater for relatives of diabetics than for individuals of the same age and sex in the general population. Relatives of diabetics would like to know their risk of developing the disease. The purpose of this paper is to present estimates of risks from data on the first-degree relatives of 6600 diabetics that will be useful for genetic counselling. A more de¬ tailed account of the data and its genetic inter¬ pretation will be published elsewhere.
